Microsoft Fabric
About
Microsoft Fabric is a cloud data platform that pulls data out of many systems into one store, OneLake, so every report and query runs off the same copy. In AEC that lets a firm report across its design, project management and accounting systems at once, instead of reading each platform's own dashboard and reconciling the numbers by hand. Data arrives through vendor-built connectors, an open Delta Sharing feed, or a shortcut that reads a file left in another cloud without copying it. Power BI is a workload inside Fabric rather than a separate product, and Fabric is bought as pooled capacity rather than per seat, so a firm already running Power BI dashboards meets Fabric as the layer underneath them.
How teams use it
By audience
- Executive Leadership
- Reads cross-system portfolio reporting built on data landed in OneLake from Forma, Procore Analytics and the firm's ERP, rather than one system's own dashboard
- Compares projects that live in different platforms on the same measures, because the data is conformed once in the lakehouse
- Buys Fabric as pooled capacity, so reporting cost is one capacity line rather than a per-seat count across tools
- IT & Systems Administration
- Provisions Fabric capacity and workspaces for the firm and governs who may read which project data through OneLake and Purview
- Builds Dataflow Gen2 pipelines that pull Autodesk Forma, Assemble and BQE Core extracts into OneLake on a refresh schedule
- Replaces per-tool exports and hand-maintained SQL warehouses with one lakehouse the reporting team queries
- Registers the Entra app and OAuth scopes each connector needs, and mirrors existing SQL and Dataverse estates into OneLake without ETL
By phase
- Design
- AE firms land BQE Core project, time and invoice data in OneLake to report fee burn and utilisation across a design portfolio
- Joins design-phase labour data to downstream construction data so the same project reads end to end in one model
- Pre-Construction
- Pulls Assemble model properties and saved views per model version into OneLake, so quantities can be compared version to version for takeoff and estimate checks
- Holds model quantity history alongside cost data, which a single BIM tool's own reporting cannot span
- Construction
- Ingests the Autodesk Forma Data Connector extract (account and project level) for RFI, submittal, cost and issue reporting across jobs
- Receives Procore Analytics 2.0 tables into a Fabric Lakehouse over Delta Sharing for cross-project schedule and cost analysis
- Lets a contractor running both Forma and Procore report on them side by side, which neither platform's own analytics does
