Microsoft SQL Server
About
Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database engine a firm runs on its own Windows or Linux servers, or in a container. In AEC it is mostly a destination rather than a tool anyone opens: construction platforms replicate project and financial data into it so reporting runs off one store. Microsoft sells it per core in Enterprise, Standard and Developer editions, and the current release is SQL Server 2025. Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance are separate managed services built on the same engine.
How teams use it
By audience
- IT & Systems Administration
- Runs, patches and sizes the instance the firm owns, on Windows, Linux or in a container, licensed per core rather than per seat
- Receives replicated Procore project data through a partner tool, so reporting queries a copy instead of the live platform
- Lands Procore Analytics 2.0 Delta Share output through Procore's own SQL Server packages on a schedule the customer sets
- Serves Power BI, Tableau and Qlik Sense over ODBC, so reports written against an existing instance keep working
- Mirrors into Microsoft Fabric OneLake from SQL Server 2016 onward, using change data capture on releases before 2025
