About

Azure SQL Database is a fully managed relational database service in Microsoft Azure, built on the SQL Server engine. In AEC it is most often the warehouse a firm loads its project, cost and payroll systems into, so reporting runs off one store instead of each platform's own dashboard. Microsoft handles patching, backup, high availability and scaling, and compute is bought as provisioned or serverless capacity, with a Hyperscale tier for very large databases, rather than per seat. It answers the same T-SQL as on-premises SQL Server, so existing reports and ODBC drivers keep working against it. Azure SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines are separate services on the same engine.

How teams use it

By audience

IT & Systems Administration
  • Provisions the logical server and database, sets the firewall and Entra ID sign-in, and issues the logins that connector platforms and BI tools use
  • Receives scheduled extracts from construction systems through connector platforms such as Kroo, which lists Azure SQL as a warehouse destination
  • Serves Power BI, Tableau, Qlik Sense, Looker and Domo directly, so reports query the database without a separate extract step
  • Mirrors into Microsoft Fabric OneLake, or takes replication from an on-premises SQL Server, so analytics and the operational database stay separate
  • Hosts an ArcGIS enterprise geodatabase, so GIS teams edit feature classes in the same store the reporting team queries
  • Replaces a self-hosted SQL Server the firm had to patch, back up and size itself
